Most people can learn to groom their cocker, which will save them considerable money over the years. Grooming "mistakes" will grow back and can be trimmed better the next time. It is easier to learn if you attempt trimming about 2 weeks after the breeder or groomer has trimmed your puppy. You will be able to follow the pattern. As a rule, the puppy needs to be brushed once a week and, as the coat comes in, the cocker should be brushed and combed twice weekly. Combing is actually more important than brushing since brushing doesn't work out the mats. Around 10-15 months of age the puppy coat will start to shed and the adult coat comes in. With this increase in shedding, the coat will start to mat and need more frequent bathing, combing and brushing. The pet cocker benefits from keeping the coat short, a long flowing coat is beautiful but not very practical. Generally the pet cocker needs trimming every 4-8 weeks. Most breeders would like for you to come back for at least one grooming. They want to see how the puppy is developing, expose you to grooming and answer any questions you may have. |
